(Part III: Team Assessment*)

“A team is a distinguishable set of two or more individuals who interact interdependently and adaptively to achieve specified, share and valued objectives.”

This assessment was developed to assist a team to define what type of team they are (for more, see Teamwork and taskwork behaviours (ebrary.net).

There are nine maxims for each team member to evaluate.  A lack of agreement on how a team is performing in each maxim, identifies areas needing improvement.

Maxim 1 Teamwork and task work are separate.

Maxim 2 Team members observe each other’s work.

Maxim 3 Team members provide and accept input from each other.

Maxim 4 Team members’ use closed-loop communication to ensure effective communication.

Maxim 5 Team members provide back-up to each other during task.

Maxim 6 Team members view the “team” as an integrated whole.

Maxim 7 Team members nurture mutual dependence.

Maxim 8 A team members’ behavior is a function of circumstances.

Maxim 9 Teams change over time.

Assessment results reveal whether the team is:

  • Pseudo Team or a Dysfunctional Team
  • Effective Team
  • High-Performance Team

Reviewing results of each team member score by Maxim highlights what is needed to improve the team.
